Breaking Down Cloth Diapers {Pockets}

Today I will be breaking down pocket style cloth diapers. Pocket diapers are a great cloth diapering option due to their versatility and ease of use.

A pocket diaper is composed of a waterproof exterior and a lining that keeps the baby's bum dry. Most pocket diapers have a micro-fleece lining that wicks away moisture to provide a stay dry feeling, but some (like Bum Genius) have a suede cloth lining.

This is a Bum Genius 4.0 pocket diaper.

In order for the diaper to be effective you need an insert that will absorb well. Many different types of inserts are used for pockets. The most common are microfiber, hemp, cotton, and bamboo, but truly anything can be used as a pocket diaper insert. You can use prefolds or flats,  or repurpose receiving blankets, towels, or other absorbent scrap fabrics you may have around your home. The great thing about pocket diapers is that you can add or remove absorbency to customize the diaper to your baby's needs.

There are so many different brands and styles of pocket diapers, but they all have the same basic function. You can find pocket diapers with either snaps or aplix closures, and they come in both sized and one size varieties.

Pros:

-easy to pre-stuff and have ready for changes

-easy for dads/caregivers to use

-easy to adjust absorbency for your baby's needs

Cons:

-need to remove insert before placing diaper in wet bag

-inserts need to be re-stuffed after each wash

The insert does need to be taken out before placing in wet bag.
