Homemade Baby Food & Vital Baby Press 'n' Pop Mini Freezer Pots

I love making baby food for my kiddos. It's super duper easy, so much cheaper, fresher and tastes incredibly better than the jarred stuff. I had a magic bullet that I used to use, but I got a food processor at Christmas and it has made things SO much easier. We just started solids with our youngest about two weeks ago. He's had bananas, avocados and now sweet potatoes. I typically keep enough fresh food on hand that I don't have to freeze things, but I also like to have food in the freezer in case the bananas go bad (or get eaten by my big monkeys!) or whatever the case may be. So, earlier this week, I whipped up some Sweet Potatoes for the freezer. I also purchased some Vital Baby Press 'n' Pop Mini Freezer Pots a few months ago. In the past I've used ice cube trays, but I didn't particularly like all the chemicals that were leeching into my children's food (one of the reasons I make it all myself).

I steamed my sweet potatoes.
Then I threw them, a couple slices at a time, into my food processor. This doesn't make them totally pureed and runny, like your typical Stage 1 jars of food. This has a bit of 'chunk' to it. It is easily mashed in to more of a white mashed potato consistency, but, since we delay solids a bit with our kiddos, I don't worry as much with the chunk. Any who...
Once the sweet potatoes are all chopped up, I dished the potatoes into the 1 ounce Vital Baby cubes.
Popped the top on them...
Piled them up and stuck them in the freezer.
When it's time to pull them out of the freezer, you can see why they are called "Press 'n' Pop" cubes.
The cubes look small, but it is a decent amount of food for a 'lil guy {or gal!}
On the bottom of each cube is a soft area...
Put your finger on that and ...
Press!
Out POPS the food - even in a completely frozen state! I did find that it was easier to let the straight-out-of-the-freezer cube sit on the counter for just a few minutes before press and popping.

There's your frozen cube of food ready for thawing and chowing.
And then, you have a very happy baby who is digging the new tastes and textures!

Do you make your own baby food? Have your tried the Vital Baby Press 'n' Pop Mini Freezer Pots or another baby food cube?

Disclaimer: I was not compensated in any way for this review. I purchased my own set of Vital Baby Press 'n' Pop Mini Freezer Pots for our own use. All opinions are my own and you may have a different experience.

I used silicone muffin cups, they are horrible to bake in but great for freezing purees. After they were frozen I would peel the food out and wrap them up in saran wrap and put them in a plastic bag in the freezer.

Neato! I make my own food and was hating having to freeze in ice trays. Nice solution. I also try to feed her what's fresh and on hand, but the frozen is faster for when food has to appear NOW! mama!

I tried - and failed miserably - to make my own baby food with my first. I really want to make it this time if we end up doing purees with him. (Still debating that vs baby led solids/weaning but that's a whole 'nother story) These press n pop containers look neat. Where did you get them? And what kind of food processor do you use?

@Timmi - I never thought about using those for freezing! Great idea! I could never get stuff to bake correctly in them! lol

@Kristina - you're right, frozen can be a life (or at least an evening!) saver sometimes :-D

@Two Little Monkeys - I got them off amazon (the first mention of them is a link & should take you to them) 8 come in a pack - which is enough to freeze, then you can pop them out & store as a group in a larger container if need be. My food processor is a kitchenaid (http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KFC3100ER-Chef-3-Cup-Chopper/dp/B00005LA9H/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1299283589&sr=8-4)

I make our baby food too. I do have a baby bullet, I didn't have a very good food processor. Plus I am in love with the adorable containers! Anyways, I try to pick a day and just make baby food. I try to make enough for a couple of weeks:) I am really liking your containers too! I might look into those, so thank you for sharing/ Here is a link to mine if you would like to check it out...

I'm planning on making my son's food once he gets to that stage! When he was a newborn we bought a dozen jars of organic stage 1 baby food because I knew that I wanted to use glass jars for storage of the food I make him :) I'll just start out with feeding him those, then make my own once they're all cleaned out :) It's such a money saver and from all the things I've read, including your post here, it isn't all that time-consuming! Thanks for the post!

I use the original magic bullet and love it! Then I freeze in Baby Cubes which I also love. These ones look really neat though too.

The Pampered Chef just came out with a manual food processor. I am getting one. I think it will be so handy for making baby food!
