Covers Week

Now that you know all about fitted diapers and prefolds you will need to figure out what kind of cover is best for you. There are a few different options as far as materials go:
-PUL
-Fleece
-Wool

What is the difference between the three?
PUL-(Polyurethane Laminate) - This material is made with either a polyester knit fabric, cotton/poly blend, or cotton woven fabric. You can find it laminated with either a 1 mil or 2 mil layer of polyurethane which is a durable water resistant coating. The thiner laminate will keep the material stretchy and soft. The thicker laminate will make the material a little stiffer but seem more durable. With PUL you will find that it is not breathable. No water can get out but no air can get it.

Fleece- This material is used by a lot of moms who want their child's bottom to be able to 'breath' so to speak. Fleece is a breathable material which allows air to flow through to the baby's skin helping to keep rashes away and to help clear them up if they do get one. Fleece is also great for wicking away moisture and not absorbing or repelling.

Wool- This is also a favorite by many moms. Wool, like fleece is breathable and allows air to flow freely through it. Wool does require a few extra steps for caring for it which will keep some moms from using it. It needs to be lanolized and requires a long period to dry. Wool helps regulate body temperature, keeping the baby warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

Covers some in different styles as well. You can get a cover that opens and closes with either velcro or snap or you can get a 'soaker' cover that pulls on like undies. Finding a diaper cover that comes in velcro that holds well is kind of tricky. We all HATE to end up with lint filled velcro tabs or chains of diapers in our washing machine. I have found a few different brands that work well with the velcro actually sticking one being the Bummis Cover.

i hope this is not just a dumb question, but i am very new to this. do the fleece and wool covers REALLY keep the mess in? it just seems counterintuitive to me that any kind of unlaminated fabric would actually be able to keep pee from soaking *through* ... and what about those liquidy (yuck) "sick" poos? it seems like the mess would at least absorb all into the fabric, if not completely ending up on the outside. thanks for explaining all this to a CD newbie :)

I am anxious to hear more about the fleece covers as this really intrigues me!

I don't know if you will read this but I tried to send you an email at kristna@clothdiaperaddiction.com and it failed.

I have one question that I want to ask you and I didn't find any other email address on your blog. Please tell me what to do.
