Something very exciting is happening in our lives on Friday - my sweet one year old and I are flying to Denver, Co - for free! I was given a free flight voucher from a dear friend of mine, so Ella and I are flying out to Denver so she can meet my aunt, uncle, and two cousins. I can't wait!!!
My traveling buddy! |
Here's the reason I can post this on the blog: I need your vacation friendly cloth diapering tips! Have any of you flown with a child in cloth diapers? Gone away from your diaper sprayer for 5 days? What kind of wipes did you use? Favorite diaper on the trip? HELP! Post a comment below and clue me into your most helpful traveling tip.
Then, in honor of my sweetness turning ONE last week, and because I'm grateful for your help - I'll be drawing a winner from the helpful comments and sending you a small wet bag for your own diaper bag. I'll draw the winner next week Tuesday when we return from our adventures...hopefully all in one piece!

Thanks in advance for your tips - I'll be sure to share what helps us!

I didn't fly but drove for 18 hrs. We used bumgenius mostly though I have a few other kinds and used disposable liners the whole time we were gone. Worked great when she went potty u just scoop liner and throw away no spray necessary! Hope this helps. Good luck and have fun.
It's all on how much you wanna do. I would suggest gdiapers so you don't have to vary around a bunch of stuff. When I went away for 4 days it didn't bother me to bring my reg cloth and I used a garbage bag cuz I don't have a large wet bag. I did use disposable wipes then. Only because mine are wet. If you use a spray bottle and dry wipes bring em! But my choice for a trip like that would be gdiapers
We dont have a sprayer so we just swirl the poopy ones in the toilet a few times to get them as clean as we can, then put them in a shopping bag or a garbage bag until they can get washed.
We've done this several times!
My no-fail plan is to make sure I am using flushable bio-liners and a diaper that can be folded up similar to a disposable to conceal the odor. We use bio-liners full time, meaning we don't own a diaper sprayer because the liners do such a great job at catching poo. If you are using non-cloth wipes, I recommend using a free and clear brand so that you can fold them back up into the diaper if need-be in the event that you're not near a trash. Some also prefer bringing baggies in case you aren't near a toilet and need to put the liner with the #2 somewhere. Diapers with bamboo fabrics are much better for concealing odors if you're planning on carrying dirty diapers with you for a period of time. I tend to prefer an AI2 so I don't have to carry as many covers (I still carry 1 or 2 as a back up). Lastly, I highly recommend a pocket diaper for the duration of your flight, double stuffed with an extra insert or a doubler, so you don't have to worry about changing the diaper for the duration of the trip unless baby goes #2. Good luck!
flushable liners!! they are an absolute must for travelling.they dont take up much space in the diaper bag, and they save a lot of time and effort when cleaning up. Good luck, and have fun :)
I travel internationally on 10hr flights w/ my son and echo using disposable liners, that way you can just flush #2s and not worry about the stinkies getting too bad. I also prefer using covers with fitteds while in flight/long car rides as it's almost leak proof and can go on for longer periods of time. For wipes I just bring my cloth wipes and an empty peri-bottle, I fill up the bottle after we pass through security or in the plane and then just use that as we do at home (spray wipe or baby) and toss the wet wipe in w/ dirty cloth diaper in wetbag.

I haven't done a big trip with cloth diapers, but I think for the flying to and from part you might want to use a disposable product -- something like Flips' product or even a regular disposable diaper. That might cut down on the bulk of your actual diaper bag while on the plane. - Trisha
I just got back on Sunday from a 10 day vacation and I brought my cloth diapers. I brought a variety (pockets, Flip w/ organic inserts, and prefolds with covers). I found the best to use were the prefolds because they washed easy. I had a washer but they had hard well water so I had to come home and strip all my Flip and pocket inserts because they were stinky. The prefolds were all fine though.
I have a large zippered wetbag that I used for dirty diapers. I just swished the diapers in the toilet since I didn't have a sprayer but I suppose you could also try liners. I brought my own detergent and washed in the washer at the vacation house. I used disposable wipes so I didn't have to worry about flying on the plane with a wipes solution since liquids are a no no.
Good luck!
I would suggest flushable wipes! I use them in my diaper bag for when we are out in about and don't need the extra spray bottle taking up a lot if room! You can get flushable liners but really its not hard to just dunk in flush. :) and AI2's would probably work best so you don't have as many covers that you need :) enjoy your trip!
For travel I would use a hemp or bamboo fitted and cover. When you arrive I would just use prefolds and covers. We don't have a sprayer so we just swish DS poopy dipes but I have heard good things about flushable liners. As for wipes get a travel spray bottle and dry whips. Have a safe trip!!
I've never flown with the little one in cloth, but we have never used a diaper sprayer. Use fleece liners & swish them around in the toilet. I understand on the plane you'll be unable to do this so I suggest flushable liners for this.
use disposable wipes - easy and double as hand wash/quick clean up of face while out and about. I always bring detergent premeasured in small containers and for the stinkies a pair if rubber gloves to dunk and swish with. I like AIO or AI2 for travel - easy on, easy off. we typically use prefolds at home, so those are a drastic change. happy travels! -Lisa

I love our flushable liners for long trips. Using covers with hemp or bamboo inserts help to save space.
Use flushable liners, definitely. Using covers with flats or prefolds will save you lots of space when packing and flats & covers dry quickly so you can do laundry more often and not have to pack as much. I would suggest something easier to get on and off, like an AI2 or AIO for the plane rides in case you have to make some quick changes. Make sure to bring your cloth safe detergent! I've travelled lots with cloth (mostly driving, though) and it's really not hard at all!
I like gdiapers for when I'm on trips away from my washer, their biodegradable inserts are awesome. When using disposable wipes on the go, I like their gwipes.

I usually use disposable wipes for travel, but if I were using cloth like I do at home, I believe I would pre wet the cloth wipes and put them in a baggie or small cloth wipe container. I would definitely use disposable liners. I love them! I think I would carry on my cloth diaper stash in case they get lost. Have fun!
We've traveled a few times with cloth. For one trip we drove and were staying at a place with a washer and dryer. I packed enough diapers for 2+ days and washed while we were there, no biggie. I took a sample size of detergent so I didn't have to take all of portion any out. When we flew and stayed at a hotel, we used the disposable liners (grovia or flips) and covers. It's not my first choice but we didn't have access to a washer and I'm not that extreme to where I would wash in the tub and let line dry. My biggest tip would be to remember to change often! Time can pass quickly when traveling and nobody likes a wet outfit.

We took a 2 wk road trip this summer and while dd is potty trained, there was no way we were stopping every 2-3 hrs for her to pee so we put her in the Grovia biosoakers with a cover. Worked wonderful and there wasn't much washing needed - only the covers if the soaker leaked a little. Not sure if that would be something you want to do but it worked awesome for us!
I could not travel without my flushable Bumkins liners! They are big enough to catch the bad messes and the "stuff" really sticks to them. It doesn't roll off! lol And to make packing diapers less bulky I use covers and hemp prefolds instead of pockets or cotton prefolds. The covers can be wiped and re-used so I can pack less of them. And the hemp is trimmer and more absorbent.
I realize this is a little late for this trip, but we've just returned from our own cross-country trip with our 1yo. I found AppleCheeks were fantastic--we used them as AI2's and just switched out the inserts, which made for a less bulky diaper bag on the plane.
Also, I'd recommend trying in advance to locate a cloth diaper store near your destination in case you find yourself in need of something. (We found ourselves in need of a NoseFrida and a thermometer, and discovered a cute little diaper store in Toledo, Ohio, that I wish I'd found sooner--it might've saved us the need to make an extra drive--and them from having to open the store for us! (They were very nice about it.)
Boo! I am so sad I missed this blog until now! I have flown with my lil man last summer when he was 9 months old. I traveled by myself and ONLY used carry on luggage! Try that with cloth diapers! That was a challenge. The way I did that though was just this way...
I used Flip covers with gcloth and gdiaper disposables. I packed AIO's in my suitcase with hemp doublers and used those at night. I did use cloth wipes for the trip as well. I got thin flannel ones and used those since they were easier to carry. I traveled during the summer so I didn't have to worry about not having a sprayer. I just took the AIO's outside and sprayed them off with the garden hose. :)
Now... here is how you would have packed to make it work if you were me and only using carry ons:
All your clothing and the AIO's in suitcase.
Baby clothes, covers, and diapers in diaper bag
All your extras in your "purse", which for me was the size of another diaper bag.
I carried my son in my Ergo and things worked out fabulously! :)
Thought I would share even though I know this drawing is over. :)
